What Is Astral Avatars?

Essences, Souls, and the Shape of Power

In Astral Avatars, characters begin as mortals in a fragile world touched by the Astral Realms. Through rare opportunities and dangerous rituals, they gain Astral Conduit and absorb Primary Essences such as Fire, Water, Shadow, Gravity, Arcane, Sound, or Fate.

Each essence permanently binds to the soul, changing how a character thinks, fights, and interacts with reality. No respecs. No easy reversals. Every choice on the Astral Ladder matters.

The system is designed for long-form campaigns where players evolve from Astral Citizens into Astral Beings, Astral Knights, and beyond.

The Astral Ladder

From Mortal to Avatar

Progression is not just about levels. It is about Reincarnation. At key thresholds, a character must surrender their body to ascend an Astral Rank, climbing a ladder that includes:

Astral Citizen → Astral Being → Astral Knight → Astral Magistrate, and eventually one of three higher paths:

  • Path of Authority
  • Path of Will
  • Path of Concept

At the top of the Ladder, some beings become Avatars: living embodiments of cosmic ideas that can shape realities, govern astral domains, and write rules into the fabric of their own worlds.

Astral Avatars is built for deep, narrative-first campaign play, where the rules of the system are revealed gradually through exploration, lore, and the will of Azeron, the Transcendent Architect.
